I suppose a moderator is invented for just that reason. To deal with any in-game problems but also to stay connected with the players. Staff is there to work on the game and as much as I(and probably more) love to chat with players, sometimes you are just too busy. A player might think said staff member is being elitist or even arrogant, but imagine hundreds or possibly thousands of players trying to have a casual chat with you and you'll understand that's just not possible.
Edit: I think adding more 'community' people, either as moderator or in some other function is a great idea btw.
