Any suggestions relating to combat systems. Post things you liked (or didn't like) in other games Please don't double post, instead like the replies with the suggestion you think is good.

Instead of it being like FO, why not have it be like LoL, casting and runnning?

Point and click with fancy animations! That is, I don't want something overly involved that requires silly timing or combos. Instead, maybe just buffs, gear, and skills that are suited to any specific preference of gameplay. Kind of PoE-like, I suppose. It'd be nice to see deeper customization than the four classes and useless hybrids, but something that isn't scary to newcomers on the surface.
I mentioned this in the other thread because, at the time, I hadn't seen this one yet: please no carpal-inducing-grinding. That being said, I'd love a grindy game. lol

Buffs would have been better in FO if the classes were more balanced. It wasn't hard for 1 class to use buffs from another class. Buffs that short term, long term, reserve mana instead of using it once...
In FO the combat was basically just based on health. I think the only thing that got calculated was luck. I wondered why didn't any of the enemies have armor or dodge attacks?

I quite enjoyed the 16-bit like grafics of FO, some RotMG animations of just weapon moving and shadowings and all would be more than enough Buffs? why not single powers for individual classes (just like diablo), that way i wont get mad with them hibrids Multiple characters would be better, instead of hibriding... Oh yea, hi guys fun idea would be that the type of hair gave you bonuses or hair colors, even grant you special powers More ideas: Boss battle type PvP, where one player is OP and has to be defeated by the other players... just like in BGO

Buffs that short term, long term, reserve mana instead of using it once... Yea, that was a big problem, but we have all gone with it being part of the game and how Gamer made it. Hope that we won't be able to be allmighty or demigod by using everything you want because you have best gear. No. You shouldn't be able to throw fireballs if you're a Warrior. In FO the combat was basically just based on health. I think the only thing that got calculated was luck. I wondered why didn't any of the enemies have armor or dodge attacks? Yea, the fact that monsters had only HP and nothing else made it weird to balance. The only way Gamer had to make the game harder was simply setting monsters to have more and more HP. Till they reach ridiculous amounts lkike 8M or so.
If monsters had Armor and Dodge like players, we could've seen bosses with less than the million HP mark reached.
He added some debuffs near the end of the game, and that was a good thing. But if you plan to do this, hope monsters will have their own MP (or whatever you'll call it) so they don't spam the skill for the whole battle. They could use some MP regen, but no infinite MP please.Comments in bold.

Too many games rely on fancy graphics and movement, the line effect to show who you were attacking in Fo was kinda weak, and a little too simple but it did cut lag from fancy movement, something simple like a line of attack could be used but different colours represent different things. The bubble effect was good for casting spells, an attack position for each weapon and a "standing" position would be only needed rather than a continuous slashing method. also easier to animate.

Point and click was really fine in my opinion. But after awhile, it got boring. Animations would be really nice, but not necessarily needed to make a great game.
Instead of the enemies just plooping over, they should do.. I don't know, just anything but that. I don't mind a grind game, but make it interesting. Add some cool spells, maybe some area of effect spells, or something like that. Make some cool dash abilities or something.
Add raid type areas with tons of monsters, anything to make it interesting. I'd like to see harder combat in general. Not based on health, but enemies that have actual spells they can use to damage, stun, paralyze, poison, or other unique effects. Maybe even turn you into a llama? I don't know in specific, but anything interesting that gives a laugh to combat is great.

SO if you like point and click and want it to be more engaging d you then like strategy (turn based) system? Or more 'counters' and stuff with skills or something?

Well I'd think it should be a more real time combat sort of system, not a turn based system. I just think it should be kind of like FO, but with more skills and interactiveness. Pretty much not a "sit back and wait" type of thing. I know that's not the way with bosses (mostly), but I think normal enemies should be "harder" in the way that they should have skills, counters, or whatnot.
Edit: It should be "user friendly" or "noob friendly", but have enough interactivity to not make it boring within 30 minutes.

The classes should be more individualized and have different battle styles, in old FO mages and rangers were pretty much the same as warriors, they just got in 1 or 2 hits before the enemy got to them. Also no 2.0 weapon speed, different weapons should attack at different speeds or have some universal cooldown system for spells and basic attacks.

This may be hard to impliment since it comes from a different styles of game, but I really enjoy attacking raids in Dawn of the dragons. I think it would be really cool if the game had different tier raids for noobs all the way up to veterans. You could have personal 1 person raids small 5 people raids large 50 people raids and the like. You could even have special zones you get teleported to after talking to an npc. Just something to think about.

I think players could cast debuffs on enemies, and the effect is showed with a sprite above their head, for example if a player casts a skill that gives the poison debuff to the enemy, there should be purple bubbles above his head, but not animating. For the debuff system i suggest not only the bosses cast debuffs like in FO, but normal monsters too, swamp monsters causing viruses or diseases, potions for removing the effects and buffs that make you resistant or immune to these status. Normal monsters such as golems, ghosts, goblins and stuff shouldn't cause such status, they are only attached to certain types of enemies.
Another thing is a simple attacking mechanic, large attacking animations may cause massive lag in the server and problems in the reduction of such. With simple attacking animations by online moving the weapon, not the entire sprite may reduce the work needed and the lag from the servers.
And i ask please, please, no recoloring already used sprites. This is really annoying and doesn't make the game fun, just completely repetitive.

Seriously, I don't think you guys realize how much I wish I was at the point where I could be doing mob AI. It is SOOO much more fun. Also, when it comes to mobs, while I would like them to all have some cool AI that casts debuffs and such, it probably won't happen at first. Mostly because programming a full AI is some serious stuff. Also if it takes more than a few milliseconds to make a decision, and even that is really too long, if there are 100 people attacking monsters, the entire server will lag.
