At this point it's too early to tell if a rebirth like we've seen in FO will take place in the new game. It falls under the subject of end game stuff I guess which we haven't fully discussed yet. Personally I think a rebirth as seen in FO, where you basically do the same content twice or trice without any alterations should be avoided but there are many ways you can define "rebirth" in a way that could be interesting and beneficial to the game/story/etc. But like I said, we haven't touched that subject yet.

What LT said.
I never did understand the whole "do this all over again" thing. I guess with some more structure and story like we are aiming for it might be fun to do it again. Aside from what is essentially a chance to pick new skills, I don't understand it at all.
With the class system we have described, how would you suggest doing it? Just reset all abilities and skills that you have chosen? If you didn't reset the skills, you would have a major imbalance and also you would be limiting what we can use a requirements for skills such as level.

Rather than rebirth, I would rather crunch out a variety of endgame quest-lines that give you various bonuses for finishing them. I mean, you'd rather have new content that powers you up, than doing the same stuff all over again riiiiight?
Maybe you only get to choose to do a set number of them. Maybe you could do them all.
Maybe there are secrets.

Since a new skill system is being implemented I had a thought about rebirth. Say once you get to the maximum combat level you can rebirth and say the reward is you could pick a couple of skill that you have maxed to remain permanently maxed out. This way there would be tons of replayability since you could try to max out all skills. And by permanent I mean that should you switch them out your skill levels would remain maxed out in order to preserve the limited number of skill slots.

So in addition to keeping a skill, you get an extra slot (for the skill)? It might be a way to introduce extra slots. But anything more than one slot at a time and there might be an imbalance between players who have nothing maxed and players that end up with 1/2/3 slots maxed. Especially with pvp and such.
Really though, it is not a bad idea. Gives the opportunity to have more slots and possibly a way to get all the skills.

I was thinking of having a set number of skill slots, just not loosing your progress in that skill if you swap it out on your next run through. But as I said you must have it maxed out on that play through.

When rebirth was being considered for FO, Kainui and I were brainstorming about some possibility of introducing elemental abilities that came with rebirth. So instead of being a normal non-elemental character, now you unlocked some sort of extra powers that influenced your ability to fight certain elemental mobs. Eg. a fire character would be much stronger against plant-mobs and weaker against water-mobs. We were also thinking of new maps that non-rebirthed characters couldn't access. So instead of starting the game over and playing it all over again, you were powered down a bit, given new abilities, and given a whole new part of the game to play, with the option of returning to the old areas. Bit of a ramble, but hopefully that makes sense. I thought it was a really neat idea at the time. The main takeaway though is that re-birth should introduce a new way of playing the game.

Well, in FO, RB was required to equip T5 stuff, access areas after FN and also so you get to ascend later. You got some new things by restarting, but I agree that if such system is implemented, it will give a whole other experience, not just grind again to the max.

I agree with what Pink stated earlier. I'd much rather see game content being produced. With lots of quest lines and all sorts of things. Instead of making it easier to level up at higher levels, simply make it harder. Then balance that out with quests that give a good amount of exp and boom.
By the way, hope the level cap is something good. I personally care more about storyline/leveling. I have that psychological thing about achievement. Must achieve maxness! Haha.

Perhaps if there was some sort of rebirth it would be because you opened a mysterious black box with a time portal and by repeating what you did in the past with the knowledge you have now (read as: certain quest lines completed) would then unlock certain side goodies.
For instance, in your first playthrough you walk by a bandit and when you talk to him he just says, "Scram kid!" and later on you talk to a fisherman who says bandits wrecked his secret fishing spot. The second time around when you see the bandit you can now fight him in a duel so that later on when you come to the fisherman he invites you to his secret fishing spot which is just a tiny little map somewhere else where you can relax and fish or whatever.
The best part about this is that it seems like time passed but really in the second playthrough if you somehow didn't talk to the bandit and challenge him to the duel and spoke to the fisherman first instead, the fisherman will just say some generic text about how he's bored but the actual wrecking of his fishing spot won't have happened. So you can always just walk back to find the bandit to challenge him without any repercussions or difficult programming issues where you're able to be reborn and then not have access to certain reborn stuff because you didn't act in a timely manner -- since timeliness doesn't matter!
I hope that was worth your while.
