I just hope it's GMT time (the one gamer used in his game). You could have like passive human mobs that turned in werewolves in the night, or ghosts and vampires that appear just in night, or a graveyard which in the day is normal, but in night a lot of skeletons appear from the graves, In the day you could add a ice cream shop that moves between cities every 30 minutes, said ice cream could give you health, buffs and stuff, or something like shops only are open at the day.

anything that would rely on 'real time' is bad because it's not available to everyone.

Or GTA time (1Min = 1Hour) a little too OP 24 mins is a new day That depends on the differences between what happens in day and night, if different enemies show up, then 24 minutes would be way to short of a day, but if the only difference is lighting, a shorter day would be fine.

Use Llama time. Odd numbered days, hours, light/darkness.
Boom.

If we were to implement a day/light cycle it would make sense to make a short day/night cycle where the night time is also way shorter than the day. Its about experiencing a day and night dynamic, but logging in when it's night all the time isn't fun hence a shorter night cycle. Something like 4 hours day, one hour night, possibly even shorter, would have to test what works. Doesn't have to be synchronized with our 24 hour cycle. Keeps it dynamic. And unless you play 24/7 you wouldn't experience multiple day/night cycles while playing in one day.
EDIT I like to add it's still very uncertain at this point if dynamic light will be used, so don't get your hopes up.

Also, I would like to add that a day/night cycle is MUCH easier to add than dynamic lighting. A day/night cycle can just colorize everything slightly with different hues to give the effect of day/night. Really shadows aren't even needed to get the point across. Dynamic lighting would be more like ambient lighting. A torch on the wall or glowing eyes deep in a cave that light the walls. That is what is really hard.

This I have given much thought to, and you mentioned a seporate layer in making. Do you mean like a seporate rasta layer like when using ps3k? If so I understand how it possibly could be done. Wheather its the most efficiant way I don't know, ask if your interested. though currently trying to move house so kinda unreliable ATM.

I think you should make it so that different places have different lighting and it takes a small fee of gold to teleport from place to place make it so you could make a small sink for money and so that you could have changes in environment that would keep the game Intresting
